Keystone Outpost 20 years later

As The Outpost celebrates 20 years, here’s a look back, through facts and photos:

Groundbreaking: April 20, 199

Opening: Nov. 22, 1991

By the numbers:

27,000 total square feet

$6.2 million = cost to build

65,000 = pounds of product shipped to Outpost during busy two-week periods; 70 percent is food, the rest is beverages and linens.

650 = how many pounds each canister, hooked onto gondola cables, used to carry and wheel through underground hallways. As of last year, the system changed, and snowcats carry about 11,250 pounds of food in three trips directly to the kitchens. “Planning is key to this building,” said Dave Scott, executive chef of mountain dining. “We can’t just go borrow milk or cream or butter if we run out.”

6 miles = length of sewer line, which cost $1 million to build (The Outpost also has its own water treatment plant).
