History

The first official state BBQ challenge was held in Frisco, Colorado in 1993, with only 12 teams – split almost 50-50 between Frisco-area professional and amateur chefs. During the first few years, the event was held in the Historic Park eventually growing to encompass two blocks of Main Street.  Now in its 21st year, our event extends over six blocks of Main Street and can attrach over 30,000 people.

Over the past 20 years the Town of Frisco has partnered with six non-profits to put on the event and has raised over $800,000 for those organizations.  The BBQ Challenge creates an outlet for other local non-profits to raise funds for their organization.

The Colorado BBQ Challenge is a Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS)-sanctioned competition.  KCBS sanctions BBQ and Grilling competitions across the U.S. and promotes barbeque as America’s cuisine.  In addition, KCBS has an extensive Certified Barbeque Judging program.  It is the largest society of barbeque enthusiasts in the world.  Winners of the Colorado BBQ Challenge in Frisco are eligible to compete in the American Royal – the “World Series” of Barbecue.

On Thursdays in Spring 2014, we will celebrate the event’s history with some “Throwback Thursday” (#tbt) photos from past events, such as the one below, on the Colorado BBQ Challenge Facebook Page.  Share your memories with us as well!

#1 Dad Essay Contest

Dads hold a special place for us in our hearts.  Traditionally, the Colorado BBQ Challenge is held on Father’s Day Weekend each year, and 2014 is no different.  Our event serves as a perfect getaway to show our Dad we know he wants more than a new tie –  with great BBQ, the Rub It, Smoke It, Sip It Whiskey Tour, and of course, tons of family fun up and down Frisco’s Main Street.

Each year the Town of Frisco asks you to submit to us a short essay of how much your Dad means to you.  If your essay is chosen as a winner, you can win some serious BBQ goodies.

Stay tuned for more information about this year’s Father’s Day Essay Contest, but feel free to bust out the box of tissues and get a rough draft prepared…

Music Line-Up

June 12th

Music Stage (Madison & Main Street)

7:45 pm – 9:30 pm

The London Souls

The London Souls’ unique reinterpretation of classic hard-hitting rock and roll formulae recalls elements of the past with an ever-present boundless energy, fit to cement their place in the future. Tash and Chris have been nothing short of a best-kept secret among New York City concert goers since the band’s formation in2008, building a fervent and dynamic fan base leveraged by their ever sustained reputation for consistently well-rehearsed and impassioned, explosive live performances. The band’s celebrated sound and spirit draws significant influence from the driving force of British rock pioneers Cream and Led Zeppelin to billowing and bouncing funk and soul, to the layered harmonies and memorable hooks of The Beatles and The Hollies, to the contemporary psychedelia of My Morning Jacket. The London Souls have shared the stage or toured with the Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Keb’ Mo’, Buddy Guy, Ben Harper, Blues Traveler and Lenny Kravitz, as well as touring every major city in America and playing major festivals from Mountain Jam to Wanee Festival.

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Mile High 101 Rock Band

Mile High 101 plays a high-energy mix of rock and roll from the 70′s all the way through the present. Led by SGT Brian Person, the group specializes in horn-driven funk and dance music, and performs at formal events, festivals, and entertainment establishments.

3:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Naive Melodies

Naïve Melodies is a gem for those enamored of the brilliantly creative and boundary pushing sounds of ‘80s rock pioneers, Talking Heads. This well-honed ensemble band pays close attention to replicate the nuances of the wildly innovative and ground breaking music that made the Talking Heads beloved by millions. Naïve Melodies celebrates this passion to the pleasure of jam packed venues throughout America. The band resides in Northern California and routinely tours throughout the college town venues and summer festival circuit.

6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Tab Benoit Band

Tab Benoit is a Cajun man who’s definitely got the blues. Born November 17, 1967, he grew up in Houma, Louisiana. A guitar player since his teenage years, he hung out at the Blues Box, a ramshackle music club and cultural center in nearby Baton Rouge run by guitarist Tabby Thomas. Playing guitar alongside Thomas, Raful Neal, Henry Gray and other high-profile regulars at the club, Benoit learned the blues first-hand from a faculty of living blues legends.Medicine, Benoit’s latest release on Telarc, successfully joins two gifted guitarists/songwriters in a session that proves greater than the sum of its very talented parts. Set for April 2011, the 11-track recording features seven new Benoit originals co-written with ace songwriter Anders Osborne. Engineered by David Z, Medicine spotlights the work of keyboardist Ivan Neville, drummer Brady Blade and bassist Corey Duplechin. Fiddler/singer Michael Doucet of BeauSoleil makes a special appearance on three tracks.

Bonerama

New Orleans’ Bonerama evokes vintage funk, classic rock and free improvisation in the same set; maybe even the same song. Bonerama has been repeatedly recognized by Rolling Stone, hailed as “the ultimate in brass balls” (2005) and praised for their “…crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls” (2007). Bonerama carries the brass-band concept to places unknown; what other brass band could snag an honor for “Best Rock Band” (Big Easy Awards 2007 and 2010).
